What is a speech and language impairment?
Speech and language skills are the most important acquisition your child will ever make. Most skills or knowledge are learned through language.
A child with a speech and language impairment may have difficulty with speaking clearly, language comprehension, effectively communicating thoughts, reading, writing, or problem solving.
Your child may qualify for speech and language services if he/she has difficulty with one or more of the following:

Your child may qualify for speech and language services if he/she has difficulty with one or more of the following:
- Articulation (errors in speech sound production) - your child may substitute one sound for another, distort sounds or omit sounds from words
- Receptive Language - difficulty comprehending what another person is saying; difficulty following classroom directions
- Expressive Language - limited vocabulary; word-finding difficulties; awkward sentence structure; unable to use language appropriately for social interaction
- Fluency (stuttering) - repetition and/or prolongation of sounds, syllables or words
- Voice - quality of voice may be harsh or chronically hoarse; may speak with a weak voice or excessively loud voice; pitch disorders
